The Callibrity team developed an intuitive API creation wizard as part of a broader web portal. The wizard simplifies the API creation process through a step-by-step interface with sensible defaults and embedded documentation. By consolidating the onboarding process into a centralized location, this tool eliminates inefficiencies and reduces churn. It also serves as the groundwork for future innovations, such as an embedded API designer, API management tools, and no-code testing capabilities—all aligned with a design-first development philosophy.

Internal API for API Creation & Management

To ensure scalability and composability, our team created an internal API to manage the entire API creation lifecycle. This foundational component not only powers the web portal but also supports alternative interfaces like command-line tools or scripts for teams with different preferences. Beyond functionality, this internal API sets a new standard for API quality across the organization, serving as a benchmark for all future development.

Templates & API Style Guide Libraries

Standardization was another critical goal. Introducing templates for generating new repositories, ensuring services started on the right track. To maintain quality over time, reusable libraries were developed, making adherence to the internal API Style Guide seamless. These libraries could be integrated into both new and existing services, reducing drift and reinforcing consistency.

Additionally, boilerplate code generation from Open API Spec (OAS) files was implemented. This solution encourages a design-first mindset by enabling developers to focus on business logic rather than infrastructure code, streamlining the development process.

API Registration Overhaul

The legacy process for API registration was complex and error-prone, requiring developers to manage Terraform code and submit pull requests—a source of significant delays and frustration. By revamping this system using Kong API Gateway and Deck, automating API registration as part of the wizard workflow, eliminated Terraform-related failures, streamlined the registration process, and freed development teams from burdensome manual tasks.
